Cinco de Mayo in NYC, 2027: The Real Story, the Parade and the Date

Cinco de Mayo marks one battle, on May 5, 1862, when a badly armed Mexican army beat the French at Puebla. Mexico's Independence Day is in September. In 2027 the fifth falls on a Wednesday. The city's parade ran on a Sunday in both years we could check, and its 2027 date isn't out yet.

If you say “Happy Independence Day” to a Mexican friend on May 5, they'll be polite about it. The big night in Mexico is the eve of September 16, when the president repeats the call to arms from the balcony in Mexico City. Cinco de Mayo is a proud date with a very specific hometown.

The battle, in order

  1. Jan 1862European forces land at Veracruz, over Mexico's unpaid debts. Spain and Britain soon pull out. France doesn't: it wants a monarchy in Mexico.
  2. Apr 28, 1862The first fight, at the Cumbres de Acultzingo. Mexico's general, Ignacio Zaragoza, resists and is forced to fall back toward Puebla.
  3. May 5, 1862The French reach Puebla and attack again and again. Zaragoza's men hold the forts of Loreto and Guadalupe, with Indigenous communities from the region fighting alongside them. History.com puts the Mexican force at 2,000 to 5,000, badly equipped, against roughly 6,000 French.
  4. 5:49pmA telegram reaches President Benito Juárez: “Las armas nacionales se han cubierto de gloria.” The national arms have covered themselves in glory.
  5. Sep 1862Zaragoza dies of typhus at 33, four months after the battle. Juárez renames the city Puebla de Zaragoza.
  6. 1863The French come back in greater force and take Puebla and Mexico City. In California, Mexicans are already marking May 5.
  7. June 1867With the French gone, Emperor Maximilian is shot and the republic returns.

The battle didn't win the war, but it showed the French could be beaten, by what the National Archive calls a force of farmers and humble citizens, and it set France's plans back a year. That's why the date stuck.

Why it got bigger north of the border

In Mexico, the day belongs mostly to Puebla: parades, reenactments of the battle, and food like mole poblano, chalupas and lamb barbacoa. It isn't a federal holiday there.

In the United States it started early. History.com reports that Mexicans in California raised money for the troops as news of the war arrived, and that Los Angeles and San Francisco were marking the anniversary by 1863. The Chicano movement took it up in the 1960s as a way to show Mexican American identity, and today it's marked across much of the country. If it strikes you as a little commercial now, you're not wrong. It also has a real history underneath.

Mexican New York

The Census Bureau's 2020-2024 survey counts about 341,000 people of Mexican origin in New York City, with roughly 104,000 in Brooklyn, 95,000 in Queens, 81,000 in the Bronx, 41,000 in Manhattan and 19,000 on Staten Island. And there's a real tie to this date: many of them trace their roots to the state of Puebla. A 2001 article in Harvard's ReVista said the area had the feel of a “little Puebla.” So for a lot of New Yorkers, this is the hometown battle.

The NYC parade

The Cinco de Mayo NYC Parade forms on W 106th St between Manhattan Ave and Central Park West, marches south down Central Park West from W 106th to W 97th St, and ends on W 97th St between Central Park West and Columbus Ave. That's nine blocks along the park. NYPD's 2023 advisory and a PIX11 notice for 2026 give the same route.

It isn't always on May 5. In 2023 it was on Sunday, May 7, and in 2026 on Sunday, May 3. With May 5 on a Wednesday in 2027, the Sunday before or after would fit that pattern, but that's our reading, not an announcement. Nobody had published a 2027 date when we checked, so look for it in the NYC DOT weekend traffic advisory that spring. It's a long way from us, about 3.4 miles, so take the C to 103 St. The B stops there too, but not on weekends.

The big bar-crawl style events are commercial, and they change every year. We've left them out, as we do with other restaurants' plans.

We're Cantina Rooftop, at 605 W 48th St, Manhattan's first Mexican rooftop, open since 2015. If the weather's good in May the glass roof opens, and we'd expect plenty of people to have the same idea on the fifth. We haven't announced anything for May 5, 2027.
