An unsolved origin
Where it started is still argued over. Nicaragua and Mexico both claim it, and a popular theory credits recipes Nestlé printed on its milk cans in Latin America. Soaked cakes were already old in Europe by then.
What holds it together is the airy sponge, which can take on all that milk without turning to mush. It's sweet and it's cold. Use a spoon, because the milk that pools at the bottom is half the reason to order it.
Ours is listed as tres leches cake and dulce de leche, so there's a fourth milk on the plate, in a way.
