Manhattan Cruise Terminal Guide: Getting to Pier 88, Parking, Luggage and the Night Before
The Manhattan Cruise Terminal is at the end of our street, so we see the ships, the taxis and the suitcases every week. Here's what to know before you sail: which pier is in use, how to get there from the airports, parking, what to do with your bags, and the blocks around the ship.

The fares, hours and terminal rules below come from the terminal operator, the city, the MTA, the Taxi & Limousine Commission, the Port Authority and the attractions' own sites, checked November 2026. They change, so we link the official pages. Your cruise line has the final word on your check-in time, so read your boarding documents too.
Make sure it's the right terminal
"New York" cruises leave from three different ports: the Manhattan Cruise Terminal on the Hudson in Hell's Kitchen, the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Red Hook, and Cape Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey. They're far apart and you can't walk between them, so check the terminal on your documents before you book a hotel or a car. In Manhattan, Norwegian sails year-round, and Carnival and several smaller luxury and expedition lines call in season.
Which pier: 88
The terminal runs along 12th Avenue between West 47th and 54th Street and has three piers, 88, 90 and 92. In 2026 only Pier 88 is operating: Pier 90 has been closed to ships since early 2026, and Pier 92 has been out of use for years. The terminal's mailing address, 711 12th Avenue, is at the West 55th Street end, which is where vehicles go in. If you're on foot, the Pier 88 entrance is across 12th Avenue from West 48th Street.
- On foot: cross the Hudson River Greenway at West 48th Street. Cyclists on the Greenway move fast, so wait for the light.
- By taxi, rideshare or car: every vehicle enters at West 55th Street and 12th Avenue. Taxis and cars drop passengers and bags at the curb on the second level.
- Driving yourself: park first, then take your bags down to the second level for check-in. The terminal says you can't drop the bags and then go back out to park.
Getting there from the airports
From JFK
Yellow taxis charge a $70 flat fare between JFK and Manhattan. On top of that come a $0.50 MTA surcharge, a $1 improvement surcharge, a $2.50 congestion surcharge and a $2 airport access fee, plus $5 on weekdays from 4 to 8pm, tolls and tip. Outside rush hour that comes to about $76 before tolls and tip, and a $0.75 congestion toll may apply depending on the route. The meter should read "Rate #2 – JFK Airport". These are the city's taxi fares, checked November 2026. Traveling light? Take the AirTrain ($8.75) to Jamaica and the E train to 50th Street.
From LaGuardia
There's no flat fare: taxis run the meter, plus a $5 airport surcharge and the usual surcharges. By transit, the free Q70 LaGuardia Link bus connects to the E train at Jackson Heights–Roosevelt Avenue, and the E runs to 50th Street.
From Newark
The Port Authority lists estimated taxi fares by zone (checked November 2026): about $65 to West 14th–50th Street and $70 to West 51st–96th Street, plus surcharges, tolls and $1 a bag; get a receipt from the taxi dispatcher. By rail, take AirTrain Newark and NJ Transit to Penn Station.
At any airport: don't let strangers steer you into a car. Use the official taxi stand or your app, check for a "T&LC" or "TAXI" plate, and make sure the meter is on.
From Penn Station, Port Authority and Grand Central
- Penn Station: the C or E uptown to 50th Street, then about 15 minutes on foot west to 12th Avenue and two blocks south. The uptown platform at 50th Street has stairs, so it's hard with heavy bags.
- Port Authority or Grand Central: the M42 bus runs across 42nd Street to its last stop at 12th Avenue, by the Circle Line pier. From there it's about 6–7 minutes north along the river to Pier 88. Subway and bus rides cost $3 (checked November 2026); tap a contactless card or phone.
- Ferry: NYC Ferry lands at West 39th Street (Pier 79), about 9 minutes south of Pier 88.
Boarding day
- Timing. The terminal says baggage processing starts no earlier than 9:30am and boarding usually begins between 11:30am and 12:30pm (checked November 2026). Some lines assign arrival times on busy days, and Carnival has warned that guests who come early may not be let in, so arrive at your assigned time.
- Security. Adults need their boarding pass and a government photo ID. Knives of any blade length aren't allowed.
- Bags. You arrive at street level and go up to the customs hall; porters take your checked bags to the ship.
- Coming home. Ships usually arrive around 7 to 8am. Your bags wait in the baggage hall, then you clear customs and head out to taxis, buses or the garage.
Parking
Parking is on the roof above the pier, it's limited, and the terminal says it isn't guaranteed for every passenger. Reserve through the official directions and parking page, which also has the current rate and hours. It's card only, and the height limit is about 8 feet, so check before you go.
What to do with your bags
The terminal has no luggage storage, and neither does the Intrepid Museum next door, which doesn't allow suitcases in the submarine or the Concorde. If you have hours to fill before boarding or a late flight home, book a spot through an app-based network such as Bounce, Radical Storage or Stasher, which list partner shops in Hell's Kitchen (prices and locations change, so book in the app), or ask your hotel whether it can hold them.
The day before or after: what's within a few blocks
Walking times here are from the Pier 88 entrance, and they don't count waiting at the 12th Avenue lights.
- Intrepid Museum (Pier 86), about 3 minutes south. The aircraft carrier, the Space Shuttle Enterprise and the submarine Growler. Open daily 10am–5pm in fall and winter (last entry 4pm); closed Thanksgiving and Christmas. Check the museum's site (checked November 2026). Near the Intrepid.
- Hudson River Park, right outside. The riverside path runs past the terminal; Pier 84, with its fountain and dog run, is about 4 minutes south.
- Circle Line (Pier 83), about 7 minutes south. Harbor and around-Manhattan boat tours. Schedules change by season, so check the Circle Line site.
- Ninth Avenue, about 10 minutes east, for restaurants of every kind, and Times Square about 20 minutes east.

Cruise terminal questions
Which pier do cruise ships use at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal?
In 2026, Pier 88. The terminal has three piers (88, 90 and 92), but the city's 2026 plan says only Pier 88 is operating. Your cruise documents name your terminal and pier, so check them.
Is there luggage storage at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal?
No. The terminal says it has no storage lockers and can't hold bags. App-based networks such as Bounce, Radical Storage and Stasher list partner shops in Hell's Kitchen; prices and locations change, so book in the app. The Intrepid Museum has no bag check either.
How much is a taxi from JFK to the Manhattan Cruise Terminal?
Yellow taxis charge a $70 flat fare between JFK and Manhattan, plus surcharges (MTA, improvement, congestion and the $2 airport access fee, and $5 on weekdays from 4 to 8pm), tolls and tip. Outside rush hour that's about $76 before tolls and tip (checked November 2026). The terminal's own site still shows an older, lower fare.
Where do taxis drop off?
All vehicles enter the terminal at West 55th Street and 12th Avenue. Taxis, private cars and rideshares drop you and your bags at the curb on the second level.
Can I walk from Times Square?
Yes, it's about 20 minutes on foot to Pier 88, at the end of West 48th Street. With suitcases, a taxi or the M42 bus to 12th Avenue is easier.
Is the Manhattan Cruise Terminal the same as the Brooklyn or Bayonne terminal?
No. New York has three cruise ports: Manhattan (Hell's Kitchen), Brooklyn (Red Hook) and Cape Liberty (Bayonne, New Jersey). You can't walk between them, so check which one is on your boarding documents.
Where can I eat near the cruise terminal?
Cantina Rooftop is about 3 minutes on foot from the Pier 88 walk-in entrance, at 605 W 48th St: Mexican food and margaritas on a rooftop, Tuesday to Sunday from 5pm, with brunch on weekends from 12pm. Dinner before you sail.
