A piñata and a sundae, on one menu line

Piñatas reached Mexico in the 1500s. By the usual account, Augustinian friars in Acolman used them around pre-Christmas masses, with seven points for the seven deadly sins.

Two stories, plenty of toppings

That's a long way from a kids' party, though the logic is the same: break the thing and collect the reward. Older roots get traced through Spain and Italy to China, with varying confidence.

The sundae has a feud of its own. Two Rivers, Wisconsin, and Ithaca, New York, have fought over it for decades, and Ithaca has an 1892 newspaper ad to show. Mixed toppings are the fun of it. This one is about the moment more than the finesse.

On our menu

The line reads tres leches ice cream, marshmallows, M&M's, mini Oreos and berries, with chocolate sauce. The menu doesn't say how big it is, so ask before you order one for yourself.
