The frozen margarita, born in a soft-serve machine

The frozen margarita machine was invented in Dallas in 1971, when restaurateur Mariano Martinez rigged a used soft-serve machine to pour his father's recipe.

A museum piece behind every slush

Before that, a frozen margarita meant a blender and a bartender who couldn't keep up. The original machine now belongs to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, which acquired it in 2005.

A machine keeps the texture even, a fine slush with no chunks of ice in it. The cold hides the alcohol, and brain freeze is real, so sip. It goes well with anything salty on the table.

On our menu

Same line as our regular margarita on the menu: Vozul tequila, lime and agave, only frozen. The fruit add-ons and the pitcher work the same way too.

Frozen Margarita: questions

Who invented the frozen margarita?

The machine came from Mariano Martinez in Dallas, in 1971, adapted from a soft-serve ice cream machine. Blended margaritas existed before that.

Is a frozen margarita stronger than one on the rocks?

Not by nature. It depends on the recipe, though the cold can make the alcohol harder to notice.
