Sangría: wine that goes down too easily

Under EU rules, only Spain and Portugal can sell a drink labeled plain sangria. Everyone else, in Europe at least, has to call it an aromatised wine-based drink.

Gentle, which is the trap

The name is usually tied to sangre, blood, for the color. Spain has its own word for the white version, clarea. Peach is a common fruit in either kind.

Fruit covers the wine, so the glass you thought was your first can easily be your third. It suits salty and fried food, and a pitcher saves everyone trips to get another round.

On our menu

Three kinds on ours: red, white or peach. It comes by the glass or the pitcher.
