Skinny margarita: what you're really ordering

There's no fixed recipe for a skinny margarita. The word took off with a bottled brand in 2009 and usually means less sugar: no syrup, less liqueur, more citrus.

What changes and what doesn't

Recipes differ so much that calorie counts online swing widely, and the alcohol stays the same either way, so it's a lighter drink only in part. Some versions keep a little orange liqueur.

Combier, made in Saumur in France's Loire Valley since 1834, bills itself as the world's first triple sec. Grapefruit adds a bitter edge, so this kind of margarita tastes drier than the classic. If you like them sweet, this isn't your drink.

On our menu

Ours keeps the orange liqueur, which is Combier, and adds lime and a splash of grapefruit to the Vozul tequila. The menu doesn't list calories.

Skinny Margarita: questions

What's in a skinny margarita?

Usually tequila, fresh lime, and a small amount of agave or orange liqueur, with little or no added syrup. There's no standard recipe.

Does a skinny margarita have fewer calories?

Usually fewer than one made with syrup, because it has less sugar. The alcohol is still there, so the gap depends on the recipe.
