The mezcal smash, an 1862 idea with new smoke
A smash started as a small julep. Jerry Thomas called it a julep on a small plan in his 1862 bartending book, and the formula is still spirit, mint, sugar and crushed ice. Most versions now add fruit.

Mint against smoke
Whiskey took over the name in most bars. Swap in mezcal and the drink changes character. Mint and smoke pull in different directions, and sweet fruit ties them together.
Muddling is what makes it a smash. Press the mint to release the oil. Shred it and it turns bitter. It's a long, cold drink, so it's a good one to hold on to if you're staying for a while.
Pineapple is the fruit on ours, with Soy Valiente mezcal, mint, lime and agave.

It's on our drinks menu. Our hours: Tuesday to Thursday 5pm to 11pm (last reservation 10pm), Friday 5pm to 3am, Saturday 12pm to 3am and Sunday 12pm to 9:30pm. Closed Mondays. We're at 605 W 48th St in Hell's Kitchen. Book a table.
