La Mula: the Moscow mule that never saw Moscow

The Moscow mule has nothing to do with Moscow. It was a sales idea from around 1941, when a vodka importer and a ginger beer maker each had stock they couldn't move.

Two salesmen and a copper mug

They met in Los Angeles by most accounts, though New York has a competing version. Vodka was barely known in American bars, and photos of bartenders holding the drink helped change that. Nobody agrees on where the copper mug came from either.

Mula is Spanish for mule. Tito's is a Texas vodka, from an Austin distillery that calls itself the first legal one in the state. The drink itself is simple, and it stops being refreshing when the ginger beer loses its fizz.

On our menu

Passion fruit purée is the change on ours, added to Tito's vodka, ginger beer and lime. The menu doesn't mention a copper mug, so don't count on one.
